NPI Notice

Starting May 23, 2005, Enumerator staff will be available to answer telephone and e-mail inquiries about the NPI application process. The NPI Enumerator Call Center hours of operation will be 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, EST, Monday through Friday. You may also e-mail your questions to: customerservice@NPIenumerator.com

Enumerator staff will be available to assist health care providers with questions regarding the processing of an NPI application. Please note that Enumerator staff will not be able to assist with questions such as which of your subparts should receive NPIs or where NPIs are to be placed in claims transactions.

Questions related to other aspects of the NPI legislation and regulation or other HIPAA-related matters, should be referred to the CMS HIPAA Hotline at 1-866-282-0659.

Questions regarding the use of the NPI in health plan billing should be directed to the individual health plans.

To obtain an NPI, health care providers must submit an application in one of three ways.

They may apply through an easy web-based application process, beginning May 23. 2005, at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov.

They may also choose to prepare a paper application and send it to the Enumerator, beginning July 1, 2005.

Finally, with their permission, an organization may submit the health care provider’s application in an electronic file. This option will be available fall 2005.

Health care providers may apply for an NPI using only one of these methods. When gathering information for their applications, they should be sure that all of the information, such as the social security number and the Federal Employer Identification Number are correct.

More information on these options will be available on the NPPES website beginning May 23, 2005. Again that website address is https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov.

Thank you for your interest in the NPI.
